Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a prevalent chronic and recurring mental disorder. This disorder is a leading source of disability worldwide and is associated with excess mortality rates. Currently approved antidepressants primarily enhance or otherwise modulate monoaminergic neurotransmission without curing the disease.
